What is Endoscopy and How is it Performed?

During endoscopy, air is inflated to inflate the stomach and duodenum so that the organs can be better seen and the endoscopy device can move easily.

Then, a flexible endoscope device in the form of a hose with a light source and camera at its end is pushed through the mouth and throat into the digestive tract. In this way, images of the esophagus, stomach and first part of the duodenum are transferred to a screen and examined. If necessary, a tissue sample is taken with a special wire called biopsy forceps that is passed through the endoscopy. The tube is then withdrawn and removed from the patient’s mouth and the procedure is completed.
